Yet we do what we must to get the job done. So, this is for every non-writer who\u2019s ever been asked to stretch their skills to get that campaign out the door.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ve heard it a zillion times: effective copy gets to the point. But if you don\u2019t write daily, crafting strategic sentences can feel daunting. Here are a few tips to make your writing\u2026less.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Respect the Process<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Professional copywriters have a process. Always.<\/p>\n<p>Because when you have a plan, blank pages don\u2019t scare you. So before writing a word, map out a route to victory:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Define your audience<\/strong> \u2013 Do you speak the same way to your grandmother as you do your best friend or your boss? Probably not. When you can imagine your ideal customer and use language that appeals to them, you can create great copy.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Define your goals \u2013 <\/strong>Every marketing task should have a clear objective (beyond attracting new customers). Do you want people to visit your website, or do you want more bodies through your storefront? Maybe you need seasonal products off shelves to make room for new inventory. Whatever the goal, mark it with a bullseye. Instead, try to use simple, casual words instead of fancy, <em>I\u2019m super smart and important <\/em>ones.<\/p>\n<p>During the editing phase, your main goal is to ditch as many extra words as possible\u2014needless muck that adds no meaning or value. This doesn\u2019t mean writing in a clipped or cold way, but every word should carry its weight. Here are repeat offenders to watch out for (not an exhaustive list):<\/p>\n<p><strong>That<\/strong> \u2013 Sometimes it works, but often it doesn\u2019t. We use it conversationally to make words flow, but many people overuse it in their writing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>As well as<\/strong> \u2013 Come on, folks. Just say <em>and<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In order to \u2013 <\/strong>You write <span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">in order<\/span> to sell.<\/p>\n<p><strong>End result \u2013 <\/strong>Aren\u2019t all results ends?<\/p>\n<p><strong>A total of \u2013<\/strong> Write the number. That is all.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In the event that \u2013<\/strong> If<\/p>\n<p><strong>Specific\/particular\/certain \u2013<\/strong> Cut \u2018em.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The fact that \u2013<\/strong> Because<\/p>\n<p><strong>Really\/very \u2013<\/strong> You love them, but do they <span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">really<\/span> add anything?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Literally \u2013<\/strong> Just stop. Sometimes a solid descriptor can emphasize your message but use too many and copy looks fluffy.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Start with the Ending<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Unlike an edge-of-your-seat thriller that saves the twist for last, copy needs to get there\u2026yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes that means opening with the result, or what customers get from your product\/service, before plugging your business. Consider these examples:<\/p>\n<p>Relax knowing your yard always looks amazing. Call Joe Shmo Lawncare today.<\/p>\n<p>Get healthy. Feel happy. Join ABC Fitness today.<\/p>\n<p>Make food they\u2019ll eat. Sign up for XYZ Meals today.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Edit Out Loud<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Reading (to edit) in your head has drawbacks.<\/p>\n<p>First, we speak more than we read, so our ears pick up on errors or funny-sounding phrases more quickly than our eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Also, did you know <a href=\"https:\/\/wonderopolis.org\/wonder\/does-your-brain-autocorrect\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">your brain can autocorrect mistakes<\/a>? Tricky gadgets, brains\u2026wired to anticipate. That\u2019s why yuo can read tihs.<\/p>\n<p>The trait comes in handy, sure, but it can backfire sometimes. When reading text you wrote, you know what\u2019s coming up. So, a missing word in a sentence might go unnoticed. Read that same sentence out loud, and you\u2019ll hear the omission.<\/p>\n<p>Reading aloud also helps with:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Grammar: you\u2019ll hear natural pauses and know where to put punctuation.<\/li>\n<li>Holes: when writing, it\u2019s easy to leave out obvious information, assuming the reader knows what you\u2019re trying to say.
