Email Marketing Tips

The best way to test an email is to send it to yourself. We recommend creating a contact list that contains only your personal email addresses for this purpose.

  1. Test your email
The best way to test an email is to send it to yourself. We recommend creating a contact list that contains only your personal email addresses for this purpose.
  2. Ad yourself to all of your recipient lists
It's always a good idea to include yourself in any list which will be receiving one of your email messages. Doing so will allow you to receive the email message in approximately the same timeframe as your recipients, and will ensure that you also receive exactly the same message as your recipients.
  3. Test all links in your email
It is crucial that you test all hyperlinks included in your email. You can accomplish this by sending yourself a test email and manually checking that all links are active, and point to the correct webpage. Common link destinations include personal and business websites, and social networking sites such as LinkedIn.
  4. Spell check your email
It's always a good idea to spell check your email content, as your campaign cannot be cancelled once it's scheduled for delivery. We also recommend that you spell check the contents of your Subject Line.
  5. Ensure your list contains only confirmed opt-in addresses
CAN-SPAM legislation requires that those receiving your email message have expressly consented to receive such communications from you. Any recipients that have not provided explicit permission to receive your marketing messages must be removed from your recipient list.
  6. Honor all unsubscribe requests
CAN-SPAM legislation requires that all opt-out requests be honored with 10 days of receipt. For recipients that opt-out through the "Unsubscribe" link in the footer of your emails, their subscription status will automatically be updated. For those that unsubscribe via any other method, you must manually delete them from your recipient list.
  7. Remove all words in the subject line that are likely
Spam filters are designed to block email messages based on content and specific terms deemed to be indicative of SPAM. Some of these words and phrases include:

While subject lines can technically be longer, it is recommended to keep them under 50 characters (including spaces) to ensure that they are viewable in their entirety in the email Inbox.
  10. Test your return address
When sending test emails to yourself before launching a campaign, it's a good idea to "Reply" to your message to ensure that your "Reply-To" address is active and you can receive responses, opt-out requests and feedback from recipients.
